What is Reiki?
Updated: Mar 18, 2019
Japanese for “universal or spiritually guided life force energy”
Rei – Universal, spirit, consciousness or higher power
Ki – energy, life force
Pronounced Ray-key and is believed to come from ancient texts discovered and developed by Dr. Mikao Usui back in the mid-1800s.
Reiki is a natural and safe healing technique. It is spiritual in nature but it is not a religion. There is nothing you must believe in order to learn or receive a Reiki treatment. Reiki energy comes directly from the Divine/Creator and goes through the practitioner’s hands and then directly into the client. This energy is everywhere all the time and can be channeled by anyone at any moment. Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and helps to speed up the recovery process while providing a source of energy when one is ill. Reiki can be used in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery with lasting results. The purpose is to help people realize that they must accept responsibility for their own healing and take an active part in it.
Life force energy flows within the body through pathways called chakras and meridians. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force energy nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their functions, emotions, and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings or emotions about ourselves. These negative thoughts, feelings, and emotions attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force energy. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.
Reiki heals by energy flowing through the affected areas of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibration level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes negative energy to break apart and fall away.
The benefits of Reiki
Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force energy to flow in a healthy and natural. It brings balance into the body to heal naturally. Healing is returning to a state of alignment with your higher self or true way of being. It is supportive to the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of being. Treatment can alleviate pain, reduce stress, promote deep emotional release, balance the energy system, bring peace to an agitated mind, accelerate physical healing and bring deep and restful sleep and release negative energy. Reiki can relieve pain, anxiety, fatigue, depression and boost your mood.
What happens in a Reiki session
Reiki is essentially the “Laying of hands” treatment (clothed client) on the client. There is no pressure applied and no manipulation of tissues. People feel Reiki in different ways. You may experience sensations in the body such as heat or tingling. Some people report seeing visualizations such as colors or pictures, or having memories appear. Try to allow whatever arises to pass without attaching too much meaning to it. Your experiences may become deeper the more you continue with Reiki. The practitioner will move their hands around the body. They may touch you lightly or have their hands just above your body.
How to prepare for your appointment
Wear clean, loose-fitting, comfortable clothing. You may wish to wear natural fabrics. Remove your shoes, jewelry, and glasses before your session, and keep your phone switched off or leave it behind.
